Obliterate Draconic Concept

Obliterate Draconic Concept

Hazard 20

magicalmentaltrap

Complexity Simple
Stealth DC 44 (master) or detect magic
Description Conjured up by a particularly devious conspirator archdragon, this ward was created to protect the dragon from someone who comes too close to discovering their identity by erasing the source of the danger altogether—after all, one can hardly notice the warning signs of something they aren’t even aware exists in the first place. When triggered, these runes scour a creature's mind, erasing everything even tangentially related to the very concept of “dragons” from their memories, knowledge, and thoughts, preventing them from ever even realizing that there is a threat at all.

Disable DC 50 Arcana (legendary) to alter the runes into a harmless configuration that reinforces the knowledge that dragons exist, DC 48 Occultism (master) to reassure yourself that dragons do in fact exist, or dispel magic 9th rank; (counteract DC 40) to counteract the runes.

Dragons Aren’t Real r (magical, mental) Trigger A non-dragon intelligent creature that is aware of the existence of dragons enters the area; Effect The trap scours the minds of all non-dragon creatures in the area, attempting to target and erase all memories, knowledge, and thoughts that relate to dragons as a concept. Affected creatures must attempt a DC 47 Will save with the following outcomes. Creatures traveling with a draconic companion, such as a dragonet party member or a dragon eidolon, gain a +2 circumstance bonus to their saving throw. Creatures with the dragon or dragonblood trait get a +4 circumstance bonus instead. Regardless of the outcome of their saving throw, the creature is then immune to Obliterate Draconic Concept for 1 day.
Critical Success The creature is unaffected.
Success The creature’s memories regarding dragon kind are mildly scrambled and distorted. The creature takes a -1 status penalty equal on all Intelligence-, Wisdom-, and Charisma-based rolls and DCs, including Will saving throws, and skill checks (but not spell attack modifiers or spell DCs) that use these attribute modifiers against creatures with the dragon trait for 1 hour.
Failure As success, but the effect lasts for 1 day.
Critical Failure As success, but the status penalty is -2 and the effect lasts until the creature spends 1 week of downtime to extensively study dragons and relearn of their existence. In addition, the concept of dragons is fully erased from the creature’s mind. The creature loses all knowledge, memories, and understanding of all topics about and related to dragons. Any personal memories of dragons are altered, with plausible false memories filling in details that explain the resulting gaps. Examples might include the memory of having been hit by a dragon’s breath weapon being replaced with an alchemical explosion, a scar caused by a dragon’s claw swipe having come from a sword, or their memory of a popular nursery rhyme that features a dragon instead focusing on a different creature.
The creature automatically critically fails any Recall Knowledge checks relating to dragons, and must succeed at a DC 48 Will save whenever attempting to use any ability or item, Cast a Spell, etc. with a name or effect that relates to dragons, such as a sorcerer attempting to cast summon dragon or a monk attempting to enter Dragon Stance, or the action is disrupted and the creature becomes Stupefied 1 for 1 minute.
If a creature would be affected by Obliterate Draconic Concept a second time while already under its effects, usually by triggering the hazard after at least one day has passed since rolling a critical failure against it, it treats the outcome of its new saving throw as one degree of success worse. If the creature critically fails a subsequent Will saying throw against Obliterate Draconic Concept, the effect becomes permanent and the creature permanently attributes all dragon-related concepts to other plausible explanations.
