Ancient Rites: Draconic Rituals

A dragon's best kept secret

Throughout history, many runes of significant power have been discovered or invented in order to leverage magic into mundane items. One such rune was both discovered and, subsequently, buried by dragon-kind. This rune allowed a weapon to inflict additional pain to draconic creatures and even strip away the defense that made them feared. For millenia, this powerful rune was hidden within the ruins of a Rune Dragon's vast library. However, when a dragon is wronged, especially by their own kind, they can be spiteful creatures. All it takes to undo years of protection is a magic ritual distilled into a form usable by those pesky and determined humanoids.

Wyrmbane

Ritual 4

transmutation

Cast 1 Day Cost An amount of dragon blood infused ink worth 55 gp x ritual rank

Primary Check Arcana (expert)

Target 5 pieces of ammunition

You imbue the target with dragon-slaying runes, empowering them to better harm dragons.

Critical Success You manage to modify the ritual and apply the magic in a new way. You may, instead of targeting the ammunition, target a ranged weapon of your choice within 30 feet. For the next 24 hours, every attack with that weapon applies the dragon-slaying rune to the ammunition fired from it.

Success You successfully apply the runes to the ammunition

Failure You fail to apply the runes to the ammunition

Critical Failure You fail to apply the runes to the ammunition and the baneful magic of the ritual attaches to the primary caster instead. For the next 24 hours the Primary caster is off-guard to attacks from dragons.

Heightened (7th): The applied rune is instead a Greater Dragon-Slaying rune. Additionally, the critical success and critical failure effects instead last for 1 week.

Dragon-Slaying

Rune 8

raremagicalevocation

Usage etched onto 5 pieces of ammunition

This rune is made up of intricate lettering in draconic. A piece of dragon-slaying ammunition deals an additional 1d8 persistent bleed damage on a successful strike against a dragon. On a critical hit, the AC of the dragon is also reduced by 1 until the end of your next turn.
This rune cannot be acquired without use of the wyrmbane ritual. This rune has no formula and, if transferred from the target ammunition, immediately loses all magic.

Dragon-Slaying (Greater)

Rune 15

The additional damage is increased to 2d8 persistent bleed damage. On a critical hit, the dragon's AC is decreased by 3 instead.

Call of the Dragon

Ritual 1

Cast: 2 hours

Primary Check: Arcana (expert; you must be a dragon)

You call upon ancient draconic forces and beckon allied dragons to your aid. You call upon a dragon whose level can be no more than double call of the dragon's spell level, two dragons whose levels are each at least 2 less than double the spell level, or three dragons whose levels are each at least 3 less than double the spell level.

Critical Success: The dragons you intended to call hear you and readily come to your aid. They arrive in 1d4 hours.

Success: The dragons you intended to call hear you but are not eager to heed your call. They arrive in 1d4 days.

Failure: The dragons you intended to call do not hear you.

Critical Failure: Your call is heard, but not by the allies you intended. The same dragons appear within 1d4 hours but are hostile and immediately attack you.

Ritual 3

Cast 1 Day Cost a scale from the subject dragon

Secondary Casters 2

Primary Check Arcana (expert) Secondary Check Arcana or Dragon Lore

Duration 1 Day

You siphon the magic stored within a dragon's scale to gain a fraction of it's powers. When casting this ritual, you select a dragon to be your subject dragon. The level of the subject dragon can be no more than twice the ritual's rank.

Critical Success The Primary Caster gains all of the interaction, automatic, reactive, offensive and proactive abilities of the subject dragon.

Success The Primary Caster gains one ability of their choice from the subject dragon's interaction, automatic, reactive, offensive and proactive abilities. If an ability requires another ability to function, that ability cannot be chosen.

Failure The Primary Caster gains no abilities of the subject dragon.

Critical Failure The ritual goes horrendously wrong, unleashing the stored magic within the scale of the dragon. The Primary Caster and any Secondary casters become stupified 1 (stupified 2 if the ritual is 5th rank or higher).
